Buskers

Street performing or busking is a live entertainment unlike any other. A street show draws its substance from its audience as many shows incorporate their acts around the actions of those watching the show. What makes busking even more unique is the fact that the audience decides the worth of the performance. There is never an admission fee and no tickets are sold.

Master Sand Sculpting Competition

April 11-12, 2020

Eight sculptors will compete to be named the winner of the Master Sand Sculpting Competition, winning a $7,000 cash prize. The master sand sculptors will create their own artistic pieces, not relating to the walk exhibit theme, in addition to the main sculptures. This is a rare chance for visitors to watch the art of sand sculpting in action!

Guests are encouraged to vote for their favorite sculpture, by donating pennies, nickles, dimes and dollars to the sculpture of their choosing. The sculptor who raises the most money wins the competition, but Sandy Lane and Eisenhower Elementary Schools are the real winner! All proceeds collected will be donated to these Title 1 Elementary Schools in our community.

Every penny counts!

About the artist:

Donald Gialanella is a sculptor who focuses on turning metal and found materials into large-scale shapes, figures, and symbols. His body of work includes elegant steel horses, towering, abstract totems, and wry orbs made up of discarded consumer objects, and can be found both in public sculpture gardens from California to New York, and in the private collections of the likes of Angelina Jolie and Howard Stern.

Gialanella has an impressive pedigree, having studied with the likes of Vito Acconci and Jim Dine, and worked as an artist’s assistant to Louise Bourgeois, whose iconic steel Spider sculptures resonate with Gialanella’s own work. Also like his mentors, Gialanella’s work often has subtle conceptual elements, such as the critique of consumerism implicit to his found-object sculptures.

Gialanella’s studio was first located in Cooperstown, New York, before he moved first to Taos, NM, then to Los Angeles, and finally to St. Petersburg.
